Jeremiah 1
The image is of a boiling pot - connected to verse 13.My reading this morning moved on to Jeremiah. He's a bit of a gloomy prophet compared to Isaiah who is more of your blood and thunder style. You get the impression with Jeremiah that it really wasn't his bag or at least that he entered the profession of prophet with some reluctance. See v6:
"Ah, Soverign Lord," I said, "I do not know how to speak; I am only a child."
He goes on in a similar vein throughout this openning chapter.
I like the way that God counters all Jeremiah's objections. For example in response to this outburst (v9)
Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, "Now, I have put my words in your mouth."
The Lord treats him as if he were a naughty child who doesn't want to do his homework. And there is that threat that parents make to their children right at the end of the chapter:
Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them.
God is good!
