The disadvantages with blogging as distinct from diaring - which I have done for years is that you can't be quite so personal in a blog as you can be in you diary as the whole world (and his pet dog) can see you musings. The advantages are just the same ... the whole world (and his pet dog) can see your musings. You win some, you lose some!
